Tantan is a Chinese casual dating app launched in 2014 by a company in Beijing. It’s swipe-based and has a big pool of members.
- Cool stylish design
- Chatting only with matches
- Exchanging simple messages, voice messages, pictures, and videos
- Question – Answer game as an ice-breaker
- Most of features can be used for free and extra features are inexpensive
- Extended functionality like on a social network
- Too many commercial profiles of sex professionals
- Profiles are reported by mistake and/or banned without the explanation
- All automatic processes work in a wrong way, including allowed and rejected photos, matching, logging in, etc. Even wrong reporting of profiles happens often so they are banned without an explanation or refunding
- If not to hide the personal contacts manually, they will be seen to others
1-month VIP – $1.99
3-months VIP – $4.49
In-app purchases such as Boost and Superlike
“Tantan was my favourite in 2017 but not now. I go on with it just because it’s so cheap. Otherwise I would leave it without any regrets. It seems the administrators will never work on its problems, and it’s way too annoying for using it any further. I wish I could return to the older version of it and have great hook-ups every weekend. But I should obviously choose another casual dating app for now. Cannot recommend it to other folks anymore.” (Chan, 24)
“I always get lots of messages from nice guys on Tantan. They compete with each other for my attention. But the problem is in its technical part: every day something new! At times, it doesn’t let me log in or upload totally normal and legit photos. Customer support just says reinstall it but I am tired to do this several times a day. I know there aren’t any problems with my phone, it’s exactly the app itself. I am not leaving it just because I am popular there but it became impossible to communicate through it. I will see whether it is going to be fixed nearest time or not.” (Maya, 26)
Tantan is called a bad Chinese version of Tinder. Why bad? Because the majority of reviews prove that it was effective only in first years of its existence, but not anymore. It is full of annoying factors such as bug and errors accompanying the most vital online processes. Registering, logging in and out, uploading legit photos, automatic matching are among them.
However, it can still be improved within following updates so we do not exclude it from the list completely. It has too huge potential to ignore. There aren’t many similar alternatives in Chinese market so we recommend to use it with caution until the positive result. Once you know all the flaws in advance, one is able to avoid them or go through and proceed with his search.
We rate it as “almost good” because the developers put many efforts into its design, features, and advertising. Customer support is also a few levels better than on many other dating apps, including Asian dating platforms. We believe the existing bugs will be removed soon as users were quite satisfied with the overall quality before.
However, even if it worked perfectly, we would have to warn the users it’s rather for hook-ups than for lasting relationships. It reminds Tinder not only by design and features but by the main purpose of the search as well. Look at the logo of this app: this symbol is purely playful and immature. So if you are hoping to find a same-race or interracial serious relationship on Tantan, you should know it’s the wrong place for that.
As a summary, we recommend this app to 20 – 35 y.o. Asian singles who are just after one-night-stands or going out together. An experience in online dating is needed.
